What is a QR Code?
A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information in a pattern of black squares on a white background. Unlike traditional barcodes that only hold data horizontally, QR codes encode data both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to store significantly more information—up to 3,000 characters of text or a complete URL.
Invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for tracking automotive parts, QR codes have evolved into a universal tool for connecting the physical and digital worlds. Today, they're everywhere: restaurant menus, business cards, product packaging, event tickets, payment systems, and marketing materials. Their popularity surged during the COVID-19 pandemic as businesses adopted contactless solutions.
QR codes work through a combination of positioning patterns (the large squares in three corners), alignment patterns, timing patterns, and the actual data modules. Built-in error correction means QR codes remain scannable even when partially damaged or obscured—which is why you can add logos to the center without breaking functionality.
Modern smartphones can scan QR codes directly through their camera apps, making them instantly accessible to billions of users worldwide. When scanned, a QR code can open a website, display text, connect to Wi-Fi, add a contact, compose an email, or trigger dozens of other actions—all with a simple point-and-scan interaction.
